Take the time to find out who “the guest” is when addressing the wedding invitations. If you are inviting a friend who has been dating someone for a significant length of time, address the invitation to “Miss Anne Porter and Mr. James Valerio” rather than Miss Anne Porter and guest. The personal touch will be appreciated. If the friend isn’t involved in a serious or long-term relationship, “and guest” is fine.
