Wedding insurance – what you need to know

A lot of engaged couples think that wedding insurance is only for those who may get cold feet, actually this statement couldn’t be any further from the truth. Logically, what insurance company will pay out if you just say to them “actually we don’t want to do that anymore!” – answer is none.

Let’s put it another way, weddings cost a fortune. The average cost of a wedding is more then the average value of the contents of your home, and yet while most people decide to insure the contents of their home, a great deal of engaged couples decide against the security of wedding insurance.

The plain facts are that the costs of getting married have spiralled in recent years, and anyone who is planning a big wedding needs to protect themselves financially, just in case anything on the big day goes wrong. It’s not a pretty part of your wedding planning, but it could be the most sensible, and the most beneficial.

For the price of a round of drinks at the bar, you can arrange wedding insurance policies which could cover you against some of the nightmare worst case scenarios that happen to some unfortunate brides and grooms.

Planning your own wedding day is one of the happiest times of your life. Choosing your wedding venue, flowers, cake, entertainment, catering, dresses, suits all from different suppliers.
You may end up dealing with a dozen different wedding services, so what happens if one of these companies goes bust ? You’ll join the end of the queue along with all the other creditors when it comes to trying to recover costs.

We’re not trying to scare you, just give you the facts ! If it’s the wedding dress maker that you bought from that goes bust two weeks before your wedding… ok, now we may be trying to scare you.

There are a number of firms offering wedding insurance these days, there are some specialists and there are even high street names such as John Lewis or Marks and Spencer.

As with any insurance they all offer different levels of cover for your wedding, so make sure you compare a few to see what you actually get for your money, and how much they will pay against a claim.
You need to decide what is important to you before deciding what level of cover to opt for before signing an agreement.

The key detail of any wedding insurance policy is the amount the insurers will pay out for should the wedding need to be cancelled. This can range dramatically from one policy to another, so spend time reading up.

If you have set yourself a good wedding budget, and even the most organised bride & groom may keep a spreadsheet of all the costs, expected and already paid for. This will give you good approximate figures for the overall cost of your wedding day.

So, what gets covered ?

Cancellation, or re-arangement of the wedding is a must on any policy you go for, cancelling a wedding is often classified by the wedding venue being unable to provide their services, or a key member of the wedding party is taking ill or worse….

Ceremonial attire must be covered, posh words for the wedding dress or gents suits, bridesmaids dresses etc.
Wedding gifts, including cash and vouchers, these often have a very high value at a wedding, and at the end of the night the bride and groom can be excused for forgetting about what happens to all of these.

Wedding rings, wedding flowers and the all important wedding cake; unfortunately something may happen to any of these in the mad rush to ensure everything is in place on the morning of the wedding.

As we mentioned earlier, there are some wedding services you may book who go bust, but what of those who fail to turn up for the wedding, photographers, videographers, cars or horse and carriages if any of these wedding services fail to turn up you need to make sure they are on the insurance policy.

Then of course there are the usual not-so-wedding-related items that still could ruin your day if you weren’t insured such as personal accidents & legal expenses. You may also wish to enquire about marquee insurance if you are hiring one, maybe your policy covers it, but you also want to discuss this with the company you are hiring the marquee from too.

So, forget about the idea that wedding insurance is just for people who are worried they may get cold feet, this is totally untrue.
Consider wedding insurance if you are planning a sizeable wedding and think about the money you are spending for your special day, think about it logically and give yourself a little piece of mind to stop worrying about the worst case scenarios knowing that you are covered against disaster !
